The important features are the Rook totally enprie on c8 for Matthew as White. Infact Matthew is threatening 2.Rxf8+ Kxf8 2.Qxf7# or another mate goes simply 2.Qxf7+!! Kh8 2.Rxf8#, and Dave himself is threatening mate on the 1st rank. I have given here a posible way out for Dave though it is unlikely as at move 7 of the line 7.Qe7+ wins for Matthew anyway. The actual game took a different path in that Dave played 1...Qb1+ 2.Bc1 Bxf2+ when Matthew came up with the stunning reply 3.Qxf2!! when everything is holding together despite a scattering of enprie pieces and Matthew still threatens mate, not surprisingly after the loss of a piece, Dave lost but not without a fight.} 1... f6 2.
